Search Your Past

Family Trees From The Garden of England

  • Flesh out your family tree with the British Newspaper Collection

The British Newspaper Collection now available on Findmypast has been of great use in my family history researches. Trying to find your past when an ancestor had a common name, particularly when seeking a record of death in the GRO indexes before 1866 when no ages were recorded in the index, can be tricky. A search in the newspapers for a possible death anouncement has helped me here. With keyword searches of the place they lived, occupation or husband's name, it can identify the person you are seeking.

The collection is also great for adding 'flesh to the bones' of your ancestors. These stories can bring to life your ancestors and give an insight into their characters and daily lives. I have found reference to a family having a dispute with their neighbour over some ducks, a prize-winning vegetable grower and a witness in a murder case. This shows the wide-ranging stories that can be found.
